Winter in Playa Las Tortugas

We made our first February trip to Playa Las Tortugas. We were not disappointed.

Escaping winter was exactly what our family needed. It was 75 and sunny with no rain…literally every day. We actually wore long sleeves and pants in the evening and mornings. Often clouds would sneak in around 3 pm so we learned to get our beach time in early.

We discovered a few new adventures this trip. The biggest of which was the decision to make the leap to buy a villa in Playa Las Tortugas!

Trip Highlights

  • We decided to buy a villa here!

  • Releasing baby turtles into the ocean

  • Fresh snapper and snook (robalo)

  • Brought our own surfboards (easier than expected)

  • Breaching humpback whales…hundreds of them

  • Incredible bioluminescence at night

  • 75 and sunny - nice at cool at night

  • Peaceful, mid-week lunch at Platanitos

  • Discovered the estuary rope swing and jumping off the “big rock”

Trip Challenges

  • Having to replace my daughter’s passport in Puerto Vallarta

  • Late afternoon clouds on some days

  • Evening breeze meant no glass-off for surfing

  • No personal chef because of Covid

This was our first visit where we got to help release the baby turtles into the ocean. What an experience. And then at night the bioluminescence was brighter than I’ve ever seen anywhere. And then the humpback whales started breaching. Some far away and others fairly close to shore. The experience was unforgettable.

This time we didn’t do the meal service because of covid, but Mario took great care of us delivering fresh snapper, robalo (snook) and shrimp whenever we needed it. Fish and fruit were the mainstay of our meals. For the first vacation ever I returned home more fit. Hmmm, sounds like the best diet plan I’ve ever heard of.

We brought our surfboards down with us, which proved easier than expected. First day was only two foot so both my daughters and I surfed right out front, and it was really fun. Water was about 75. Later in the week the surf got bigger which kept my daughters out of the water. But then boogie boarding took over.

The big discovery for the kids was the rope swing around the corner in the estuary. It blew their minds. So fun.

The other big discovery was finding that Villa Reyes was for sale. We loved it! It took just one walk through and we seriously started contemplating buying it.

Another highlight was a trip to Playa Platanitos for lunch. We swam across the estuary at low tide. It was a mid-week trip (and during covid) and the beach and restaurants were completely empty. This is how I like it.

February is a favorite.
